Wine doesn't spoil overnight the way food does, but a cooler stuck at 75°F or freezing your bottles shouldn't wait weeks either. Call before 11 AM for the best chance at a same-day diagnostic. Parts for some wine units are special-order, so the repair may need a second visit.

How We Repair Wine Coolers

Wine coolers come in two very different designs, and the first thing we do is figure out which one you have.

Compressor units work like a small refrigerator: compressor, condenser, evaporator, fans and a control board. Built-in wine columns and most undercounter units from Sub-Zero, Thermador, Liebherr, Fisher & Paykel, U-Line, Marvel and Perlick are compressor units, and they're worth repairing.

Thermoelectric units use a solid-state cooling module instead of a compressor. They're quiet and inexpensive, common in countertop and small freestanding models, and they struggle when the room gets warm. When the module or its power supply fails, we'll tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense or whether the unit costs less to replace.

On every call we check each zone against our own thermometer, test the fans, sensors and control board, and look at how the unit is installed before recommending a part.

Wine Units We Service

Built-In and Undercounter Wine Coolers

Undercounter wine cooler repair
15-inch and 24-inch undercounter wine refrigerators, single and dual zone, built into kitchen islands, bars and butler's pantries.

What we see most often:
  • Cooler not cooling, or warm at the top
  • One zone colder or warmer than its setting
  • Fan noise or a buzzing compressor
  • Display blank or showing an error
  • Water pooling on the floor of the cabinet
A very common cause of overheating is the installation itself. Undercounter units are designed to breathe through the grille at the bottom front. A freestanding model with a rear vent, slid into a cabinet opening, has nowhere to dump heat and will run warm no matter what you set it to.

Freestanding Wine Fridges

Freestanding wine fridge repair
Freestanding wine refrigerators of every size, compressor and thermoelectric, from brands like Summit, Danby, EdgeStar, Whynter, NewAir, Vinotemp and Wine Enthusiast.

Common problems:
  • Not getting cold enough on warm days
  • Frost or ice on the back wall
  • Condensation inside the glass door
  • Loud fan or rattling
  • Interior light or controls not working
On thermoelectric models, a failed cooling module or fan is the usual problem. On compressor models, it's often a dirty condenser, a failed fan motor or a sensor.

Wine Columns and Full-Size Wine Storage

Wine column repair
Full-height wine columns and dual-zone wine storage from Sub-Zero, Thermador, Liebherr, Miele, Fisher & Paykel and Viking, often installed next to a matching refrigerator column.

Typical complaints:
  • Temperature drifting several degrees from the setting
  • Upper and lower zones not holding separate temperatures
  • Condensation or humidity problems
  • Door not sealing, or the door alarm going off
  • Racks or rollers sticking
These are serious refrigeration units with model-specific parts. We test before ordering and order OEM parts for your model and serial number. Our Sub-Zero and Thermador pages cover those brands in more detail.

Beverage Centers and Bar Refrigerators

Beverage center and bar refrigerator repair
Undercounter beverage centers, bar fridges and outdoor refrigerators by the pool or in an outdoor kitchen.

Common problems:
  • Cans and bottles not getting cold
  • Unit freezing drinks
  • Glass door fogging up
  • Outdoor unit giving out in summer heat
  • Door lock or hinge broken
Outdoor beverage coolers fail more often than indoor ones because of heat, dust and sprinklers. If an indoor-rated unit is living outside, we'll tell you.

Wine Cooler Symptoms and What Usually Causes Them

This is a starting point, not a diagnosis.

• Cooler warm, fan running: dirty condenser, a failed condenser fan or a refrigerant problem on compressor models; a failed cooling module on thermoelectric ones
• Cooler too cold, bottles freezing: a temperature sensor reading wrong or a control board relay stuck on
• One zone off, the other fine: that zone's fan, damper, heater or sensor
• Ice on the back wall: a blocked drain, a door that doesn't seal, or a defrost problem
• Water on the cabinet floor: a clogged drain tube or a drip tray that's cracked or out of place
• Glass fogging inside: a worn door gasket, or a failed door heater on models that have one
• Loud vibration: a fan blade hitting ice or debris, or a worn compressor mount

Vibration and temperature swings are both hard on wine over time, so they're worth fixing even when the unit still feels cold.

Quick check before you call: leave a few inches of space around a freestanding unit, and make sure the room isn't much warmer than the unit is rated for.

What the $65 Wine Cooler Diagnostic Includes

The diagnostic visit is $65. During the visit we:
  • Measure the temperature in each zone
  • Check the fans, the condenser or cooling module, and the control board
  • Read sensor values and any error codes
  • Inspect the door seal, the drain and the installation clearance
  • Explain what failed and give you a written repair estimate
If you approve the repair, the $65 goes toward the total. If you decide not to repair, you pay only the diagnostic.

We don't quote repair prices over the phone. The cost depends on the type of unit, the failed part and the installation, and that only becomes clear after testing.

Repair or Replace a Wine Cooler?

Built-in wine columns and good undercounter units are almost always worth repairing. They cost a lot to replace, and the cabinet opening is sized for them.

Small thermoelectric and budget freestanding units are a different story. If the cooling module, the control board and the fans have all aged out, a new unit may cost less than the repair. We'll give you the estimate and an honest opinion, and the decision is yours.

If you rent out or manage a property with a wine cooler or bar fridge, we can coordinate access and send the estimate to the owner.

Wine Cooler Repair FAQ

Do you repair wine coolers in the home?

Yes. We repair built-in, undercounter, freestanding and full-size wine coolers and beverage centers in homes across Los Angeles.

Why is my wine cooler not cooling?

On compressor units the most common causes are a dirty condenser, a failed fan or a sensor problem. On thermoelectric units it's usually the cooling module or its fan. A freestanding unit installed inside a cabinet can also overheat simply because it has nowhere to vent.

Is it worth repairing a thermoelectric wine cooler?

Sometimes. A failed fan or power supply is often a reasonable repair. If both the cooling module and the control board are gone on an inexpensive unit, replacing it may cost less. We'll tell you after the diagnostic.

How much is the diagnostic?

$65, applied toward the repair if you approve it. You get a written estimate before any work begins.

Which wine cooler brands do you repair?

Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking, Miele, Liebherr, Fisher & Paykel, U-Line, Marvel, Perlick, True Residential, KitchenAid, GE, Frigidaire, Summit, Danby, EdgeStar, Whynter, NewAir and Vinotemp, among others. If you don't see yours, call with the model number.

Do I need to empty the wine cooler before you arrive?

Not for the diagnostic. If the repair requires it, we'll tell you in advance so you can move the bottles somewhere cool.
