Burner won't light, or the flame's uneven: Nine times out of ten it's grease in the burner ports. Lift the cap off, clean out the little holes with a pin or a stiff brush and let everything dry before you try again. If it keeps clicking and there's still no flame, then we're looking at the igniter or the spark module. See
range repair.
Hood fan loud or dead: Start with the grease filter and soak it in hot water with some degreaser. If the fan hums but won't spin, the motor's done. On the microwave-hood combos the fan runs off its own relay on the board, and that relay can stick too, which is why the fan sometimes won't shut off. See
microwave repair.
Garage freezer not freezing: A hot garage, a freezer packed to the lid and coils covered in dust is a rough combination. We check the coils, the fan and the thermostat first. Old chest freezers sometimes just lose their refrigerant, and when that happens we'll tell you straight if it's worth fixing. See
refrigerator repair.
Dishwasher leaves a greasy film: All that oil is hard on a dishwasher. Pull the filter and clean it, poke out the holes in the spray arms, and run the hot water at the sink for a minute before you start a load so the first fill isn't cold. Still greasy after that? Then we'd check the heater and the pump. See
dishwasher repair.
Compact washer won't drain: Those small in-unit washers have a filter hiding behind a little door down at the bottom, and it collects coins, hair ties, lint, the odd sock. Clean it out. If the drum still has water sitting in it, it's the pump. See
washer repair.
Dryer takes two cycles: Check the lint screen and then the vent behind the dryer. With the all-in-one washer-dryers it's usually the lint path or the condenser that's packed with fuzz, and not the heater like people expect. See
dryer repair.
