Old wall oven won't heat: Electric? Usually the bake element, and a lot of times you can actually see the spot where it burned through. Could also be the thermostat. Gas ones, it's the igniter more often than not. Before we order anything we'll check that the part's still made. See
oven repair.
Cooktop burner clicks and clicks: Did you just clean the cooktop? Water or grease gets into the burner and it'll click until it dries out. Give it a few hours and make sure the cap's sitting flat. If it's totally dry and still sparking away, the spark switch or the module has gone bad. See
range repair.
Frost building up in the freezer: Frost on the back wall of the freezer tells us the defrost isn't kicking in, so we're testing the heater, the sensor and the control. A sheet of ice under the crisper drawers is a plugged defrost drain instead, and that one's a quicker fix. See
refrigerator repair.
Garage dryer leaves clothes damp: We start with the lint screen and the vent. A long run out through the wall or up through the roof clogs up over time, and that squashed foil hose behind the dryer doesn't help. If the air's moving fine, it's the igniter or the gas valve coils. See
dryer repair.
Front-loader smells or won't drain: Wipe the door boot, clean out the soap drawer, then pop open the little drain filter at the bottom front. We've pulled coins, bobby pins and a whole sock out of those. If it's still sitting in water after that, the pump's the next suspect. See
washer repair.
Panel-ready dishwasher not drying: Is there rinse aid in it? Lots of newer dishwashers dry pretty badly without it. Plenty of the European ones dry by condensation instead of a hot element, so a bit of moisture on the plastic stuff is normal. If everything's dripping, then we'll check the heater or the vent. See
dishwasher repair.
