Garage fridge quits in the heat: Hot garage, dusty coils, older compressor. We clean the coils and test the fan, the start relay and the thermostat. If the compressor itself is gone, we'll tell you it isn't worth fixing. See
refrigerator repair.
Top-loader won't spin or agitate: Lid switch first, then the belt or the coupler, depending on the model. Big loads every single day break couplers, that's just how it goes. See
washer repair.
Gas oven slow to heat: Weak igniter, almost always. As the glow bar gets old it takes longer and longer to open the gas valve, and eventually the oven just won't light. If yours is electric, pull the rack out and look at the bake element, you can often spot the burned-through part. See
oven repair.
Burner won't light: Wipe off the igniter, clean the burner ports, let it dry out. Still clicking with no flame on a dry burner? Then it's the spark module or a switch. See
range repair.
Dryer runs but no heat: With gas dryers we usually find a bad igniter or gas valve coils. Sometimes the thermal fuse popped, and it popped because the vent's clogged, so we clean that out too. Otherwise you'd just be buying another fuse next month. See
dryer repair.
Microwave runs but won't heat: The plate goes around, the light's on, and your food comes out cold. That's normally the diode, the capacitor or the magnetron. Please don't open it up yourself, those parts can hold a nasty charge even unplugged. See
microwave repair.
