Fridge seems dead, breaker keeps tripping: This one comes up a lot in old houses. Pull the microwave plug, and the toaster's, reset the breaker and let the fridge run on its own for a bit. If it's humming along happily, congrats, your fridge is fine and you need an electrician, not us. If the breaker pops again with only the fridge plugged in, then yeah, something inside is shorted (compressor, a fan, the defrost heater) and we'll come find it. See
refrigerator repair.
Old gas oven won't light: Nine times out of ten the igniter's tired. You'll see it glow, maybe even hear a click, but it never gets hot enough to tell the gas valve to open. The real old-timers with a standing pilot? Sometimes the pilot just blew out, sometimes the thermocouple's done. See
oven repair.
Burner flame weak or uneven: Look at the little holes around the burner. Gunked up? Crooked cap? Grease? Clean it, dry it, try again. If you've still got a lazy yellow flame after all that, leave it alone and call us, that's an air or orifice adjustment. See
range repair.
Top-loader won't spin: We'd check the lid switch first, it's cheap and it breaks a lot. If that's fine, it's probably the belt or the coupler, depending on the model. See
washer repair.
Gas dryer, no heat: Usually the igniter, sometimes the gas valve coils. Now, if the thermal fuse is what blew, don't just swap it and move on, because it blew for a reason and that reason is almost always a clogged vent. We clean the vent out while we're there. See
dryer repair.
Microwave trips the breaker: Check what else is on that circuit first, it might just be sharing with the fridge. Moved it and it still trips? Could be a door switch, could be something shorted, could be the magnetron. Whatever you do, don't take the cover off, the capacitor inside can bite even when it's unplugged. See
microwave repair.
